Bluey the Therapy Dog –  How Dog Therapy Can Support Your Healing

Dog therapy is an evidence-based approach that involves the presence of a specially trained dog within therapeutic settings to support emotional wellbeing. Many people find that working alongside a calm, responsive dog helps them feel safer, more relaxed, and more able to engage in the counselling process.

I have the loveliest news to share. Bluey, my faithful companion and much-loved member of the family, has officially passed his assessment and is now a certified therapy dog. His calm spirit, gentle presence, and enormous heart have already been making a difference in the lives of those he meets.

Bluey’s journey into dog therapy

Bluey is a 3.5-year-old husky mix, a proud little pomsky, sometimes called a huskaranian. From the very beginning, it was clear he had something special. He has always shown an incredible sensitivity to people’s emotions and a natural instinct for when to be calm and present.

Bluey has been trained from being a puppy through Therapy Dog Training UK, completing required assignments before moving on to formal assessments, including temperament and obedience.

I am delighted to share that Bluey passed all his working assessments with flying colours. He is now fully insured, risk-assessed, and certified to work safely alongside me in counselling sessions.

While he certainly knows how to have fun when off duty, when Bluey is working, his calm focus and gentle nature truly shine.

How dog therapy supports emotional healing

Dog therapy is increasingly recognised as a powerful support within counselling. For many clients, especially those who have experienced trauma, sitting face to face with another person can feel overwhelming at first. The presence of a well-trained therapy dog can soften this experience and help the nervous system feel safer.

And we already know that pets bring positive wellbeing benefits.

In our counselling space, Bluey’s role is always thoughtful and client-led. He is never intrusive and always respects boundaries. His presence can help create a more relaxed and welcoming environment, which is particularly helpful if you feel anxious, guarded, or unsure about starting therapy.

Dogs have a remarkable ability to tune into human emotions. Simply having Bluey nearby can help you feel more at ease and better supported as you begin to explore the difficult experiences you’ve been through.

Key benefits of dog therapy in counselling

Dog therapy can enhance the therapeutic process in several meaningful ways. Bluey’s calm companionship can support you through:

  • Emotional regulation
  • Safe connection
  • Creative expression
  • Grounding support

These gentle benefits can make a real difference, particularly if you have experienced childhood abuse, domestic abuse, or other forms of trauma.

Emotional regulation through dog therapy

One of the most powerful aspects of dog therapy is its ability to support emotional regulation. When we feel overwhelmed, anxious, or triggered, our nervous system can move into a state of fight, flight, freeze or fawn.

The simple act of stroking a calm dog like Bluey can help to slow breathing, lower stress levels, and reduce any tension.

Many clients notice that their body begins to settle naturally when Bluey is nearby. This can make it easier for you to stay present during difficult conversations and reduce the risk of becoming emotionally flooded.

Building a safe connection with Bluey

For those who have experienced unsafe or unpredictable relationships in the past, trust can feel very fragile. Dog therapy offers a gentle bridge back to a safe connection.

Bluey’s calming presence offers gentle contact in a completely non-judgmental way.

Because dogs respond with consistent warmth, many clients find it easier to begin opening up when Bluey is in the room. He helps create a sense of emotional safety that supports the therapeutic relationship to deepen at a comfortable pace.

Encouraging lightness and creativity

Healing is not only about talking. Sometimes the nervous system needs moments of lightness and creativity.

Bluey naturally invites moments of gentle playfulness into sessions. Whether it is tossing a toy, sharing a quiet cuddle, or simply noticing his expressions, these small moments can help ease the pressure and allow you to access creativity that may have been hard to access recently.

For trauma survivors especially, reconnecting with safe, light experiences can be an important part of healing.

Grounding in the present moment

Many people who have experienced prolonged sadness or traumatic events struggle with feeling disconnected from their body and their emotions. Dog therapy can be a powerful grounding support.

Bluey can help you gently return to the present moment through sensory awareness, such as:

  • Feeling his fur
  • Hearing his breathing
  • Noticing his warmth

These simple sensory experiences can anchor the body and mind, helping you feel more stable and present during counselling sessions.

Is dog therapy right for you?

Dog therapy is always optional and client-centred. Some people love having Bluey present, while others prefer traditional counselling sessions without a dog. Your comfort and sense of safety will always come first.

If you are curious but unsure, I’m always happy to talk through what a session with Bluey might look like and answer any questions you may have.
